Go from, “I don’t know where to even start” to having a full system set up in your home and simple, engaging “mini lessons” in the scriptures laid out and ready to go each week.
Each week in our blog we publish Come, Follow Me lesson ideas and articles with simple tips and tricks to make the teaching in your home easier.
Before Come, Follow Me (CFM) came out, we had tried doing scripture study before but with 3 kids under 5 I didn’t think my kids could understand the scriptures so we would read out of the “picture book” versions of the scriptures whenever I could find the time. I told myself that they were young and reading the “real” scriptures was something we could do when they were older, and they could read and understand them.
When the CFM program did come out, I was excited but felt unsure. The program had a LOT of reading and ideas. How was I going to fit it all into a week without getting overwhelmed? Plus, my kids were young. How could I help them understand the scriptures at their level? I felt nervous to start because in the past I had started things and given up after feeling the pressure of not being “good enough” at it.
As I was pondering these thoughts the prompting came to me, ” If I could commit daily to teach my family SOMETHING from the scriptures, it would be enough!”
I felt this tremendous peace and joy as Heavenly Father taught me that even my very little and imperfect efforts were all He needed. It didn’t need to be overwhelming, it could be SIMPLE!
The prompting I had gave me the courage to start. With the overwhelm gone I felt free to experiment, try new things, make some mistakes, and even miss some days without feeling any guilt. Heavenly Father knew I was learning too and I felt Him cheering me on.
After a year of experimenting, I found a simple way to plan CFM. It took about 10 minutes at the beginning of the week and I started doing it with my husband (Yes!). I have loved how prepared I feel each week and how much fun it is sharing this responsibility of teaching my children the gospel with my spouse.
The best part of all was that my kids really LOVED doing scripture study. It was something we did together. I wasn’t the only one learning either. My kids started to understand the scriptures better. They got better at discussing and articulating their ideas. They found ways to share their simple and growing testimonies with me.
All because of that one day I chose to believe that my simple, regular efforts would be enough.
