Come, Follow Me For Families: July 11- 17

Thoughts For This Week’s Reading:

Clave

I have been thinking about this word. It says that Hezekiah, “Clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments…”

To cleave means to glue, to adhere, to join, to stick. So, to cleave to God means that we are joined with Him. But what does that look like?

I recently heard Emily Belle Freeman share a story of Charles Blondin on @inklings.institute and I knew this was my answer.

Charles was a tight ropewalker in the 1800’s. He was determined to cross Niagara Falls on a tight rope. Everyone told him it couldn’t be done. But he didn’t listen! He got a rope 1,100 ft long and attached one side on the United States side and one on the Canada side. Then he attached guidelines to secure the rope. Everything was secure accept right in the middle they could not attach a guideline so it was able to move with the wind.

To everyone’s amazement, Charles was able to cross not once, but many times. One time he did it with a potato sack covering his head, another time he brought a stove across, cooked an omelet, and brought it to the people on the other side. He even did it walking backwards and another time with a wheelbarrow.

Several months after he started, Charles brought his manager Harry so he could carry him across the tightrope on his back. Charles started with nothing else but Harry on his back and a balancing stick in his hands. When they got to the middle there was a 50 feet section of damp rope that moved in the wind.

Charles said to Harry, “From this moment on, you are no longer Harry, you are Charles”. If I sway, you sway with me. How I move, you move. If you do any balancing on your own, we will go to our death.

Harry was able to trust Charles and follow his every move exactly and they made it across safely.

Charles Blondin and Harry Colcord

After heading this story, I realized that cleaving to Christ doesn’t just mean to be joined or stuck to Him.

It means to become like Him.

It means that when He sways, we sway. When He moves, we move.

He is the ONLY one who knows the way back home. He is the only one capable of making it there.

But if we trust Him enough to give Him our whole heart, might, mind, and strength, He can carry us across.

How can you better cleave to Christ?
