If teaching Isaiah this week is leaving your feeling a little nervous, here is a fun lesson to help your children understand some of the rich symbolism and metaphor he uses in his writing.
Come, Follow Me Scripture Study Lesson
Truth: Isaiah Teaches Through Symbols
Scripture: Isaiah 2: 1-5, 12-13
Discussion Questions:
- ·What is a symbol?
- What do Isaiah’s symbols mean? (see activity below)
- What do you think Isaiah wants to teach us about Christ?
Additional Hands-On Learning:
Use the printable, “Understanding Isaiah” (you can find this below). Help your children understand the symbols Isaiah is using in these scriptures. You could ask things like:
- “Isaiah compares the temple to a mountain. How is a mountain like a temple? (it is safe and strong, the temples are often built on a hill or mountain, etc.)
- “What is a sword used for? What is a plow used for? What does this teach us about the millennium and when Christ comes again?”
- The Cedars of Lebanon were giant, beautiful evergreen trees during Isaiah’s time. They were used to build important things like David’s palace and temples. How are these trees like the proud and wealthy?
