What Can We Teach Our Kids About Prayer?

My oldest child has reached the age where they have started asking for a phone.

This is all new territory for us.

My husband and I have felt it is not quite time for that big step, but it has had me thinking a LOT about the things I will need to teach them about using such an important tool.

Of course I will need to teach them HOW to use a phone, but more importantly I will need to teach them things like:

  • How to manage their time on it
  • How to be polite on phone calls and text
  • Not answering spam calls or giving out too much information
  • What apps are okay to download
  • And the list goes on….

COMMUNICATION IS A POWERFUL PRIVILEDGE AND TOOL!

Just like we would never hand a phone over to our kids without first teaching our kids how to properly use it, we need to also teach our kids how to properly and effectively use the tool of prayer in their lives to communicate with their Heavenly Father.

Prayer is a loving gift to our children and we have the honor of teaching them about it.

When they are young we begin by teaching them HOW. We teach them to fold their arms, bow their heads, and close their eyes. They learn to thank than ask. As they grow older there is still more we can teach them about prayer like:

  • That they can pray anywhere and anytime
  • The purpose of prayer (asking for guidance, seeking forgiveness, desiring protection or comfort, etc)
  • How to listen for answers
  • To avoid repetition
  • And many more lessons

Prayer is a powerful tool of communication that our kids will need help and guidance with. This is one thing I love most about President Porter’s talk to the primary children this General Conference! She teaches the children that prayer is a gift from our Heavenly Father and that they can use it to ask for things they need and want. She invites the children to pray and ask for three specific gifts.

I love this opportunity Sister Porter has given us, as parents, to invite our kids to more intentionally use the power of prayer in their lives.
